Eugene Ipkarnak / Polar Bear Sculpture
Size 7.25” L x 7.5” H x 6.25” D
Hand carved with White Quartz
This one-of-a-kind polar bear, sculpted of white quartz by Eugene Ipkarnak, is a fine example of Inuit art from Igoolik, Nunavut in northern Canada.
Igloolik is located on a small island in Foxe Basin, just off Melville Peninsula on the mainland of Nunavut. Igloolik is a community that balances modern living with a traditional way of life. Not only is Igloolik the geographic centre of Nunavut, it is also widely considered to be its cultural hub. Ancient ties to northern and southern Baffin Island, as well as the Kivalliq and eastern Kitikmeot regions, contribute to the distinct mix of Inuit cultural traditions practised and nurtured in Igloolik today.
Each hand-carved sculpture is accompanied by an Igloo Tag, which guarantees its authenticity and certifies that the piece was handmade by Inuit artists in Canada. The igloo symbol is registered by the Government of Canada and can only be attached to original Inuit sculptures and art from northern Canada.
